Healy Hillclimb X – Afton Park, MN

Keith was at the Healy Hillclimb again this year so Eboun and I headed out to say hello and see how things were going. The weather was not really co-operative for the event I’m sad to say so I didn’t venture too far with the camera. I did get a few shots in the pit, while the drivers were in the pre-race meeting.

Breakfast with Phill – Chicagoland Eating Adventures

This past Saturday morning, Eboun, Phill and I went out for breakfast. Phill had a spot in mind and we opted to follow. I trust Phill’s taste and after this, will certainly continue to do so. Word. The food was great!

So, I was in Chicago this weekend. I had fun. I went to this party. I am grateful that some money was raised for Muad’dib. I left early like a bitch because I had just driven 7 hours to get into town and dubstep puts me to sleep. I do like friends. I had GREAT FRIENDS THERE!

A Friday Off – Al’s Breakfast at 11am

Well, I have today off of work so Eboun and I went out to breakfast before she went to work at MTN. The logical place? Al’s Breakfast.

This place is ALWAYS busy. The food is cheap, good, greasy, and fast. That is after you’ve waited in line for a place to sit. This shot is from the back of the room. What you see is what you get. Only less blurry.

The other day I went out to dinner with Hannah (http://www.hellahota.wordpress.com/) and Eboun. Wakame is a Thai/Sushi restarount near lake Calhoun in Minneapolis and it’s our friend Yo’s newest place of employment. Yo is the sushi chef of the city in my opinion and I’m lucky to count him as a friend. Hannah took these photo’s of a couple of our dishes. The one wrapped in cucumber is spicy as all get out and is a special creation just for Eboun. The heart shaped one is a joke. The desert has mustard on it. LOL!

A celebration of birth – Yours Truly

So, last Friday was my birthday and I turned… OLD. Don’t worry about it.

After a long day at work, I went out to dinner with some really close friends and of course my family. MOSCOW ON THE HILL.

After dinner, I said goodbye to my family and went out to see more of my friends at Barrio in Downtown St. Paul. It’s just a hop skip and a jump away from dinner so I got there in NO time. People think DT St. Paul is dead… they’re wrong. You just have to come down and check things out. There are pockets of life that are growing.

This place was BUSY before we got there.

It was a good night. Thanks to everyone who came out! I’m swore off drinking for a while. But apparently I just meant I wouldn’t have a drink the next MORNING. The next night, ELKO.

Star Trek – Movie Review

In our second movie of the night, we went and saw the new Star Trek movie. It was opening night so the movie was packed. We got there 40 minutes early and ended up getting seats in the back corner of the theater, which is only marginally better than sitting in the front row.

I had high expectations for this movie and for the most part, it lived up to my ideals for what a new star trek movie should be.

The basic premise, without giving anything away, is that you are going to see Captain Kirk and Spock come up. You see how they meet all the other characters you are familiar with from the original Television series. I’m not much for telling people what happens in a movie so I’ll just say that there are some significant divergences from the original which make for a very interesting 120 minutes in a dark room.

In contrast to Wolverine, the special effects in this movie are amazing. The bar is set pretty high for this franchise so that shouldn’t be a suprise. Neither should the appearance of Leonard Nimoy in the movie. In most of the newer movies, there is at least ONE cameo. Why should this be any different. It’s fun to see younger versions of your old favorites utter your favorite lines for what seems to be the first time.

There are a lot of “stars” from the bridge of the USS Enterprise so I’ll keep to the biggest roles of the movie. The players;

Chris Pine – James T. Kirk as a young troublemaker who ends up going into starfleet to see if he lives up to his deceased father. What? Deceased? Real Star Trek fans will balk at that. But it’s cool. He is obnoxious like William Shattner used to be and ignores rules like Kirk should.

Zacharay Quinto - Spock (the young one) who is coming to terms with his mixed ethnicity as half human half vulcan. He is smart, strong and… logical. This story sort of revolves around Spocks character while allowing others to be stars as well. This may be the perfect role for Zachary Quinto if he’s trying not be be only know as Sylar on the TV show Heroes. No cheerleaders in this movie…

Leonard Nimoy – Spock (the older one) who I can’t tell you too much about without ruining the plot entirely. Rumor has it that William Shattner turned down a role in this movie when he learned that Loenard Nimoy had such a large role.

Zoe Saldana – Uhura. We spend most of the movie joking with the fact that nearly no one knows Uhura’s first name. A young Uhura is a sexy thing. Kirk chases and chases but as we know from the old TV show, he never really catches Uhura.

Again, there are many others in this movie and they’re all good. Bones, Scotty, Checov, Sulu… they’re all there.

The story line of this movie is certainly hotter than the last few movies to come out of the series. The action is great and the acting is pretty darn good too. I would reccomend seeing this one if you are a fan of the original series or even if you aren’t but are at least aware of who Spock is as a character. If you don’t know who he is, you’ll be a bit lost for a good portion of the movie I’d bet. Originally this series was produced by Gene Roddenberry and his wife has been the voice of the ships computer all along. This film marks the end of that legacy as she passed away shortly after doing all the voiceovers.

This film is marked as a tribute/dedication to the Roddenberry’s.

My recomendation; go see it. It’s awesome.
