So, last night Eboun and I went out and saw 2 movies. That’s right, an old fashioned double header.
First up… X-Men Origins – Wolverine.

I actually really like all the X-Men movies so far. I, like many people my age, had an affinity toward the original comics. The movies have been fairly close to the comics and where they have been off, they haven’t been criminally so.
On the other hand, I am not one of those who followed the Wolverine spin off so closely. I have friends who tell me that the new movie is really close to the Wolverine Origins graphic novel. I guess I say all of that to say this; I liked the movie a lot. Now I have to go back to the comic books to see what I was missing.
This movie opens up with logan as a child. Then it immediately goes into a visually amazing opening sequence that shows how invincible Wolverine and Sabertooth were as brothers. They are brothers if you didn’t know. It ends up being a very interesting way to show them growing up together. I don’t want to give away the whole movie but I will say that the story moves really well and there are enough twists to keep an unfamiliar movie goer excited.
The players;

Hugh Jackman stars as Wolverine – if you don’t already understand the premise of X-Men by now, get back under your rock. A thing I didn’t know until I started looking for photo’s for this little review is that Hugh Jackman’s company, Seed Productions, also produced the movie

Liev Schreiber plays Victor/Sabertooth – Wolverines brother who has grown distant and is very violent. He pretty much kills everything.

Danny Huston plays Stryker – A man who’s story I can’t really tell very well without giving away too much of this movie. He’s the bad guy for sure, and he’s sorrounded by a team of mutants strong enough to kill most anyone. This team includes Wolverines brother, Sabertooth (or Victor).

Lynn Collins plays Kayla Silverfox – Wolverines love interest who is through a twist of fate, playing him into the hands of Stryker.
There are others, and it may be worth noting the major film acting debut of Will-i-am (of Black Eyed Peas fame), but if you go see the film, you’ll latch onto who you like best. Everyone is good.
I have only two gripes about this movie and I wouldn’t say either is a game ender by any means. First, they never call Sabertooth by the name Sabertooth. He is referred to by his family name the whole time which seems a little wierd to me because Marvel did go on to do a LOT with Sabertooth as a character. Secondly, there are a few moments where the special effects may as well have been drawn in. I mean Roger Rabit style. Again, this doesn’t ruin the movie but it is a little distracting.
Ladies will love the brief moments of Hugh Jackman running around nude and guys will love all the fights and explosions and flashing lights and stuff. Something for everyone. Hooray!
